A signal aspect is the visual appearance presented to the driver. Colour-light signalling systems can be arranged with two, three or four aspects according to the approved operating and signalling design.
More aspects do not simply mean a “better” signal. They provide different levels of advance information and require the corresponding block, control, sighting and hardware arrangement.
Two-aspect signalling
A two-aspect stop signal provides the basic stop and proceed information defined for that territory. The complete system context, signal sequence and permitted operation come from the applicable rules.
Three-aspect signalling
A three-aspect arrangement adds an intermediate cautionary indication so the driver receives advance information about the condition ahead. The meaning and sequence follow the approved rules.
Four-aspect signalling
Multiple four-aspect signalling includes an additional attention indication between caution and proceed. This supports a further step of advance information within the designed signalling sequence.
Hardware is only one layer
A two-, three- or four-unit CLS housing provides the physical positions required by the approved assembly. LED units, hoods, background screens, posts, brackets, wiring and foundations form other parts of the complete signal.
Procurement questions
State the aspect configuration, metallic or FRP housing, applicable drawing, optical-unit boundary, mounting, accessories, electrified-area requirements and inspection plan. Do not infer system compatibility from the number of openings alone.
