How to Specify a TLJB for Railway Procurement

Prepare a clearer TLJB enquiry by defining the system, drawing, housing, terminals, cable entries, mounting hardware, tests and documentation.

A TLJB enquiry should identify the applicable system and drawing, not only the box dimensions.

A useful TLJB request for quotation defines the exact interface required by the railway system. The words “track lead junction box” alone do not establish the housing, terminal arrangement, glands, supports, links or cable interfaces.

Start with the approved design and separate confirmed requirements from supplier assumptions. This makes technical comparison easier and reduces changes after manufacture.

Identify the system and function

State whether the TLJB belongs to a track-circuit, wheel-sensor, axle-counter or other approved arrangement. Include the equipment manual or specification that defines the interface.

Control the drawing

List the drawing number, revision and any approved project alteration. Do not combine dimensions from one drawing with terminal details from another without formal design approval.

Define the complete supply boundary

List inner and outer enclosures where applicable, terminal blocks, links, glands, locks, stumps or supports, conduits, fasteners, labels and loose accessories.

State cable and terminal information

Provide cable types, outside diameters, conductor sizes, entry positions, terminal count and identification. The manufacturer needs these inputs to check fit and maintainable access.

Inspection and delivery

Specify inspection authority, required dimensional and visual checks, certificates, packing, identification, quantity, delivery location and schedule. Ask suppliers to identify every deviation in a separate statement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum information needed for a TLJB quotation?

Provide the applicable system, drawing and revision, cable and terminal schedule, housing, mounting, accessories, quantity and inspection requirements.

Can a product photograph replace the TLJB drawing?

No. A photograph does not reliably define dimensions, materials, terminals, cable entries or mounting interfaces.

Should accessories be listed separately?

Yes. Listing glands, links, locks, supports, conduits, labels and fasteners prevents uncertainty about the supply boundary.
